The Grande Prairie Public Library has over 100,000 items in its collection and more than 150 newspaper and magazine subscriptions.  As well, five public Internet terminals and word processors are available to access the Internet and there is a growing list of CD-ROM titles.  Over 260,000 items were circulated in 2000 and over 153,000 people visited the Library. Information services are available at the library in person, by telephone, and by email. The library provides information and inter-library loan services as the resource centre for the Peace Library System.  Through the provincial resource-sharing network and using the library’s print and electronic resources, Peace Country residents can obtain information and materials from around the world.

 The Grande Prairie Museum has been situated in Muskoseepi Park since the early 1970s, across Bear Creek from the City’s Centennial Park.  Centennial Park was redeveloped as the anchor of Muskoseepi Park, which was officially opened in 1986. Take a step back into time – back to the turn of the last century when the Grande Prairie was being settled.    Museum is the heart of the Heritage Resources Department, housing the administration centre for the department. From this location, educational programs are developed, tours are organized and interpretive displays and temporary exhibits are designed and offered to Museum visitors.

At the Heritage Discover Centre at Centre 2000, you can go even further back in time – back to the dinosaurs!  Find out how this Grande Prairie region was formed geographically and how the dinosaurs lived.  You’ll learn about the Aboriginal peoples that lived in our area, the animals that are found in our forests, streams and skies.  Follow the human history through the time of the European settlers, Treaty 8 and to the present day.

Forbes Homestead

The Forbes Homestead is the oldest standing building in Grande Prairie. It was built in 1911 and was the first hospital in the area, an ajoining home was added in 1912 and was occupied by Reverand Alexander Forbes and his wife Agnes.    The home was restored and opened to the public in 2010.

Culture is alive and very well in Grande Prairie!    The Grande Prairie Art Gallery, one of only seven Class A galleries in Alberta, exhibits works by local artists as well as traveling exhibitions from Alberta, Canada and around the world.  The Gallery is housed in a designated Provincial Historical Site building – the Central Park High School, which was built in 1929.    

 

 

Grande Prairie Regional College

There’s no end to the music scene in Grande Prairie!  Our area has many local musicians who perform  almost every type of music – folk, rock, county and classical to name a few.  The Grande Prairie Regional College offers diploma and degree programs in music and also offers conservatory lessons for people of all ages.    Not only do the locals perform, artists from Alberta, Canada, and abroad grace our stages – whether it is the intimate Second Street Theatre stage, Crystal Centre’s Bowes Crystal Gardens, Canada Games arena or the Grande Prairie Regional College’s formal Douglas J. Cardinal Theatre for the Performing Arts.  Then, of course, there are the outdoor music events such as the Telus Country Fever, Summer Slam and Sunday’s in the Park at Muskoseepi Park’s Amphitheatre.

Grande Prairie Live Theatre

Grande Prairie Live Theatre is one of Canada’s largest non-profit community theatre companies. Producing seven shows a season and performs to an audience of over 10,000 people. GPLT relies heavily on its over 300 volunteers to produce community theatre of the highest quality.

Grande Prairie’s outstanding volunteers are found hard at work making our community a better place for everyone.  More than 200 support groups, community organizations, service clubs, youth groups and other not-for-profit agencies are active in the Grande Prairie area.
